Ernies Way

Trussed volumes and northern orientation shape a simple Wānaka home inspired by DOC huts.

Lichen cladding and plywood interiors define a durable alpine home with strong northern outlook.

"Working with Josh from Fora Architecture was such a great experience. He is an excellent listener and was able to adapt easily when we changed our minds throughout the process. Josh guided us through the architectural process, including layout and colour selections, and the end result is perfect – our architectural DOC hut inspired by New Zealand’s iconic backcountry huts. We are incredibly proud of what we created together."

Ernies Way

Set on a flat site in Wānaka with open views to the surrounding ranges, Ernies Way takes cues from the simplicity and pragmatism of local DOC huts. The home is arranged to respond directly to the local environment, positioned to maximise northern light and connect living spaces to outdoor areas while maintaining a sense of shelter and privacy.

A prefabricated truss system shapes the interior volume, creating raking ceilings and an extended soffit that moderates solar exposure — admitting low winter sun while providing shade throughout summer. Large sliding doors open the northern elevation to outdoor living spaces, strengthening the connection between inside and out.

The material palette is deliberately restrained. Lichen Colorsteel cladding and matching joinery reference the muted tones of backcountry huts, paired with custom flashings for a refined and detailed finish. Internally, plywood linings bring warmth and texture, creating a relaxed alpine character that aligns with both place and brief. The result is a simple, durable home that balances protection and openness, contemporary detailing and local influence.

"From a builder’s perspective, the design was technically excellent. The plans were clear, detailed, and easy to work from, and the attention to detail was outstanding. In particular, we love the soffit design, which allows winter sun to warm the house while preventing summer sun from overheating the space. It’s a smart, well-considered design that is both highly functional and a joy to live in. We look forward to working with Josh again on future projects."
