Faulks Road House

Schist cladding and calm interior finishes define a rural Wānaka home with gabled forms and landscape connection.

The H-shaped plan responds to its environment by maximising northern light and creating a series of outdoor spaces connected to the main living areas.

"This was our first time going through both the design process and building a home, and Josh made the entire experience feel smooth, clear, and genuinely enjoyable. From the start, he took the time to really listen to what we wanted and guided us through each step."

Faulks Road House

Set on a rural property outside Wānaka with wide views to the surrounding ranges, Faulks Road House draws on the grounded character of traditional schist buildings, interpreted with a restrained Mediterranean influence. The H-shaped plan responds to its environment by maximising northern light and creating a series of outdoor spaces connected to the main living areas.

Two parallel gables are linked by a central spine and a covered outdoor roof structure extending from the entertaining spaces. Curved window and door heads introduce softness to the robust exterior, while subtle shifts in ceiling height create moments of compression and release that bring spatial variety to the interior. Warm, textured finishes support a calm atmosphere suited to the rural setting.

Locally sourced schist anchors the home to its landscape and continues inside at the entry to reinforce a sense of permanence. Low-maintenance plaster defines the quieter services side, and well-positioned openings allow natural cross-ventilation to support the overall energy-efficient performance throughout the year. Soffits moderate summer sun while winter light reaches deep into the interior, and a sheltered outdoor nook provides a comfortable place to inhabit the site in different conditions.

The result is a refined rural home that balances durability with warmth, heritage influence with contemporary detailing, and environmental responsiveness with relaxed everyday living.

"Because this is our forever home, it was important to us that every detail felt right, and Josh completely understood that. He balanced creativity with practicality, offered thoughtful advice, and made us feel supported throughout the process. We couldn’t be happier with the result and would highly recommend Josh to anyone!"
