Rutland Street

A single-level gabled home in St Albans designed for comfortable, everyday living.

Bevel-back weatherboards, cedar shingles and refined detailing anchor the house in its neighbourhood character, with north-facing living spaces that feel light and generous.

"The brief was to have all the charm of an early 1900's character villa but have all the efficiencies of a modern day home. To have some quirks but ultimately be practical to live in. Josh aced the brief, this was reflected in the feedback from the sale of the property at its completion."

Rutland Street

Rutland Street House is a single-level gabled home designed to sit naturally within the established character of St Albans. The plan runs east–west along the site, using the long northern boundary to bring daylight into the living spaces and create a sense of openness throughout the interior.

Traditional bevel-back weatherboards define the exterior, with cedar shingles to the gable ends and a brick chimney reinforcing the home’s crafted, familiar character. A generous stud height gives the interior a spacious feel, while carefully proportioned openings and subtle detailing — including frieze boards and corbels — contribute to a refined street presence.

Internally, the layout supports ease of living with interconnected spaces and a calm, light-filled atmosphere. The placement of openings allows natural ventilation and a strong connection to outdoor areas, while the gabled form and simple roofline ensure the house reads cohesively from all sides.

Rutland Street House offers a contemporary interpretation of traditional residential architecture — grounded in proportion, clarity and comfortable everyday living.

"We worked with Josh on a character spec build in St Albans, Christchurch to design us a bespoke, character home that reflected the surrounding heritage of the neighbourhood. Josh offered quality alternative opinions and solutions to both on and off site issues. We plan to use Josh's services again in the future."
